Phygital storytelling for safari park De Beekse Bergen

At Safaripark De Beekse Bergen, the visitor experience at the elephant enclosure received a special upgrade. A member of the Kikuyu tribe welcomes you (as a hologram) in his hut and tells you how they live harmoniously together with elephants, by placing hives around their village. With the script ready, but the necessary technology not yet in place, we developed an innovative solution. Full Frame provided full videography of the villager, bringing the story to life.

Reliable technology for a consistent experience

The project involved some important factors that we had to carefully consider, such as the outdoor nature of the installation, the presence of elephants (dust), and the Dutch weather conditions. The chosen technology not only had to be resistant to dust and, temperature changes, rain, but also had to be able to be integrated into the hut. The plant had to be completely maintenance-free and automated for constant, reliable operation regardless of conditions.

The solution

An innovative approach that brings together reality and illusion

After thoughtful research, we developed a solution that brings together digital and reality: a theatrical optical illusion. An invisible mesh in the room acts as a projection screen on which a full-size hologram of the cabin’s occupant is projected. By carefully coordinating all sight lines, lighting and content, an optical illusion is created that makes the visitor believe there really is someone inside the hut.

Projection optimization and hardware protection

For implementation, we researched solutions that worked within the given dimensions, sightlines and lighting. The mesh was hung invisibly in the room for a realistic hologram illusion. The system switches on and off automatically, so employees don’t have to do it manually. The hardware was also protected from the elements by conditioning in the cabin.

3D visualizations

Good preparation = perfect projection

With 3D visualizations, we accurately determine the “sweet spot” for the projector and sight lines. Finding the right lens, lighting and ideal sightlines is crucial to making the experience perfect. In this way, we ensure that both children and adults can enjoy the experience undisturbed.

The story

Traditional wisdom told with a modern twist

The story that comes to life here revolves around a man from the Kikuyu tribe who welcomes you to his hut and tells you how the Kikuyu today live peacefully with elephants. This man, an actual Kikuyu member living in the Netherlands, was shot in a green-screen studio, paying careful attention to lighting and sightlines. Through holographic visions, which seem to rise from the smoke of a campfire, he shares his story. The clever solution? Hanging beehives! Elephants fear bees because a sting in their trunk makes drinking impossible for days. The campfire itself is an animation, while only the stones are real. This creates a unique experience where physical and digital come together – #phygital.
