Imagine a store with no products on shelves, no staff on the floor, and yet a seamless shopping experience powered entirely by smart technology. That’s the innovative concept behind KPN’s new store in Den Helder. KPN is a major Dutch telecommunications provider offering internet, television, and mobile services. Its latest venture embodies the principle of “digital first, human assisted,” and First Impression played a pivotal role in bringing this futuristic idea to life.
“Sleek design and smart tech: a perfect fit for Gen Z”
Step into the store, and you won’t find a staff member to greet you or products on display. Instead, interactive screens guide you in choosing the perfect phone or subscription. Need more help? With just one tap, a KPN representative is available remotely, and your selected product can be dispensed instantly via another kiosk.
Autonomous, yet personal
The store’s layout is minimalist and elegant—nothing loud or intrusive. This design appeals to Gen Z, a demographic that thrives on digital exploration and prefers to avoid immediate human interaction in physical stores. However, the shopping experience remains personal. By logging in with their customer profile at a kiosk, visitors can instantly access their online preferences and history. From there, it’s easy to resolve questions, sign up for a new plan, renew an existing one, or even walk out with a new device. Customers can also exchange faulty KPN equipment on-site.
Audiovisual technology that hits the mark
To create a flawless experience and an inviting atmosphere, First Impression collaborated with KPN to design the store’s audiovisual setup and deliver captivating content on digital displays. Here’s how they brought the Gen Z store to life:
Double-sided window displays
These displays shine both inside and out, catching the eye of passersby while keeping customers engaged indoors. Dynamic content, presented with crisp visuals, ensures the message resonates whether you’re strolling by or browsing inside.
Audio you can feel
What’s a store without the right vibe? A perfectly tuned music and audio system gives the space an inviting atmosphere where customers are encouraged to linger.
Kiosks with video support
Autonomy doesn’t mean impersonal. First Impression equipped the kiosks with video call functionality, allowing customers to connect with a KPN representative at the touch of a button. It’s human interaction, just a click away.
Directional sound
Sound, but only where it’s needed. Using sound showers, customers hear relevant audio without the noise spilling across the store. It’s smart, focused, and creates a better shopping experience.
